Building Connections: How to Start a Parent Support Group for Sending Care Packages to College Students

I’ve successfully launched 4 of my own kids into the world of college. They are at various stages in life now. One of my most vivid memories is not being prepared for not only how much I would miss my own kids but also their friends. These kids had grown up at my house over the years and I loved them all. I wanted to keep in touch and send them encouraging notes and small exam boxes but the task was too daunting, even with my well wished intentions. That’s when I realized that if I partnered with other parents, we could reach more students with less effort and greater impact.

Sending care packages to college students is a thoughtful way to show them love and support, especially during stressful times like exams or holidays. Starting a parent support group dedicated to sending care packages can not only benefit the students receiving them but also create a sense of community among parents. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to start a parent support group and organize care packages for college students.

  • Identify Interested Parents:
    • Reach out to other parents in your child’s college community to gauge interest in starting a support group. Use social media groups or local parent networks to connect with other parents.
  • Establish Goals and Guidelines:
    • Define the purpose of your support group, such as sending care packages for birthdays, holidays, or exam weeks. Establish guidelines for membership, communication, and package contents.
  • Set Up Communication Channels:
    • Create a communication platform for group members to stay connected, such as a private Facebook group, WhatsApp chat, or email list. This will allow for easy coordination and planning.
  • Organize Package Themes:
    • Plan themed care packages for different occasions, such as a “Finals Survival Kit” or a “Holiday Cheer Package.” Encourage members to contribute items based on the theme.
  • Coordinate Shipping Logistics:
    • Decide on a shipping schedule and method for sending care packages to students. Consider using flat-rate boxes from the postal service for cost-effective shipping.
  • Encourage Personalization:
    • Encourage group members to personalize their care packages with handwritten notes, photos, or items that reflect their child’s interests and preferences.
  • Include Healthy and Practical Items:
    • While fun treats are always appreciated, consider including practical items such as school supplies, toiletries, or healthy snacks to support students’ well-being.
  • Respect Student Privacy:
    • Respect students’ privacy by not sharing personal information or posting about individual care packages on public forums. Consider asking for students’ permission before sending packages.
  • Celebrate Milestones Together:
    • Use your support group to celebrate students’ achievements, such as birthdays, academic accomplishments, or extracurricular successes. This can create a sense of shared joy and connection among parents.
  • Collect Feedback and Adjust:
    • Regularly collect feedback from group members and students to assess the impact of the care packages. Use this feedback to make adjustments and improvements to your support group.

Starting a parent support group for sending care packages to college students can be a rewarding experience that fosters connections among parents and provides valuable support to students. By following these steps and fostering a sense of community, you can create a meaningful and impactful support group that benefits everyone involved.
